What defines an athlete?

Being an athlete is far more than just running or walking a longer distance than a non-athlete. It is far more than playing a great game of tennis or getting the most goals in hockey.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is “a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina.

The truth is, what defines us as athletes is only part of the equation! In order to be a true athlete, we need to be a nutritionist, counselor, motivator, really smart shopper and a lot of other advocacies. During my years of learning how to be a long-distance walker, I have had to find out about many things that allow me to be healthy enough so that I am proficient in my sport and thus be able to return to normal living after working out without suffering.

Some of the key issues for me, during my long-distance walks are:

  • Getting adequate nutrition while walking
  • Getting enough water to stay adequately hydrated
  • Preventing acute health issues such as cramps and blisters

I do not normally promote commercial products but today, in the name of spreading the word for the sake of enjoyment and survival I am going to talk about three products that I feel are essential for those of us pounding out the miles.

Three key products for long-distance walkers

The first product is “Elete”. This product is pure electrolyte drops. Take 5 drops under the tongue as required but especially before starting any exercise that is going to require extreme exertion. The beauty of this product is that there is nothing in it except electrolytes. No water, sugar, artificial flavouring or other yukky non-essentials.

Electrolytes keep your muscles talking to each other and to your nervous system. Here is a link to a site that explains it better than I can: Elete is available at any store that caters to athletes such as running stores.

Potassium Magnesium Tablets

The second product is the first thing anyone who is walking the Camino in Spain should buy after getting off the plane in Europe. It is water soluble potassium magnesium tablets. It is available in any pharmacy in Europe.

Doing any form of exertion causes sweat. Sweating causes the body to become depleted in certain minerals of which Potassium and Magnesium are two of the most significant. These tablets are super easy to use - just throw one in your water bottle and save yourself from the joys of cramping legs. Throw in a tablet every time you can’t taste it in your water any more.

FreshFooties

The third product, of course, is FreshFooties! Anyone knows that doing any kind of activity that requires one to keep their feet inside shoes or boots for hours on end while doing crazy things like walking twenty miles a day for a month knows how uncomfortable feet can get, and how not looking after one’s feet can impede the progress.

FreshFooties, a natural foot deodorant spray, contains important natural products that feed and protect the skin of the feet and keeps them cool for hours on end. Anyone who is an extreme walker or runner knows that looking after the feet is the difference between completing the task and getting a free pair of crutches to take home.

One word of caution: don’t forget to remove your socks and shoes regularly while participating in long walks or runs. Every time you stop… get them off and use your smelly feet treatment. Dry feet are healthy feet! Hope this information helps you to have a fun, safe and healthy time.
