What foods should you eat in order to build tone?

Ever wonder why you aren’t looking as lean as you used to even though you’re going to spin class regularly? The answer can be as simple as the food you’re eating immediately after you finish working out. According to Erin Coleman, R.D., L.D., there are certain foods we eat that will all but prevent you from looking toned. They are:

  • Junk Food
  • Sugary Drinks (pop, juice etc.)
  • Sweets of every kid (gum, candy)
  • Fried Foods
  • Baked Goods
  • High Fat Meats
  • High Fat Dairy Foods
  • White Bread
  • White Rice
  • Regular pasta

Instead opt for foods that are high in fibre like:

  • Fresh Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Legumes
  • Whole-grains
  • Nuts and seeds

High fibre foods curb your appetite and in effect lower your total calorie intake. That right there is reason enough to eat more of those. Nevertheless, we all know how difficult it is to stick to a ‘sensible diet’ with temptations lying at every corner bakery and fast food outlet. So, what’s a gal to do?

Sensible tips to sticking to a healthy diet

We all know that food is a psychological game. We eat things because we feel like it. So many memories of eating mom’s fattening food ingrained in our subconscious, making us want to eat things we know that are bad for us. Time to stop playing that movie! Give yourself a fighting chance and allow yourself to eat one indulgent thing a day in small quantities. That way you won’t feel absolutely guilty when you indulge. Because all the other times you’re actually eating something that is great for your health -- something nutritious and awesome that is leading you to that ultimate goal of looking tone, fit and buff.

Think about your fun spin class instead

Instead of being motivated by your cravings, why not let yourself be motivated by the energy of a high energy spin class? Spinning is getting more and more popular as the go-to exercise of choice. And it’s no wonder. Where else will you get the social camaraderie of a lot of people all intensely working out at the same speed combined with the benefit of a motivational instructor who is keeping your program on track? The health benefits are also numerous. (Check out our recent blog on Spin Classes in Vancouver to find out more about the health benefits of spinning).

Remember - the more focused you can get on healthy activities like spinning, the easier it’s going to be for you to resist those sweet, carby foods. And pretty soon, the only thing you’ll be craving is the adrenaline rush you get from your spin class and the satisfaction of knowing that your jeans fit perfectly.
